giving to communities

a legacy of giving and service

At Target®, community giving is—and always has been—a cornerstone of our company. We devote our personal energy, leadership skills and business strengths to support the communities where our guests and team members live and work. Since our company’s department store origins in 1946, we’ve given 5 percent of our profit to our communities, and that commitment has not wavered.

giving in Canada

We look forward to continuing our legacy of giving in Canada, and every day we’re listening and learning about the best ways to support our new Canadian communities. In February 2012, we made our first contribution to a Canadian charity by pledging an amount equal to 100 percent of the sales from our Jason Wu pop-up store in Toronto. The result? A donation of nearly $60,000 was made to the United Way Toronto. And in December 2012, visitors to the Target Canada Facebook pageOpens a new window helped us allocate a $1 million donation by selecting a cause of their choice that supported six different nonprofit organizations in Canada through our popular Give with Target Canada app.

supporting communities through volunteerism

Team members at our new headquarters already have had the chance to share in our tradition of volunteerism. Nearly 400 Target Canada team members and company leaders turned out in July 2012 to help with volunteer events throughout Mississauga, Ont., in partnership with the United Way of Peel Region. In addition to cleaning up local parks and lending a hand at area food banks, we also announced a $125,000 donation to the United Way to help fund future programs in support of Peel Region families.

Additionally, on December 6, 2012, the Target Volunteer Council organized a Day of Caring for more than 500 team members from our Mississauga HQ. We assisted over 20 leading non-profit organizations with over 1,000 volunteer hours. The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, Food Banks Canada, First Book Canada, Holland Bloorview Rehabilitation Hospital, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Humane Society, Children’s Aid Society and Canadian Red Cross were among the organizations we supported.
